What Texas A&M Baseball Means to Me

By: Carter Woods

What does the Texas A&M baseball team mean to me? Well, for starters, the Texas A&M baseball team changed my life, in the most wonderful way. If you were to ask me, the Texas Aggies are life savers, real life superheroes. SEC athletes typically follow similar routines, fans repetitively ask them to sign things, take pictures, do interviews, and are begged for personal items such as hats or gloves. Oftentimes, the athletes will be as quick as possible to complete the fans request for a picture or signature, or overall deny them, but the Aggies are different. From my observations, the Aggies do this and more. Each individual Aggies player interacts with their fans and appreciates the atmosphere that the fans create. Not only does this demonstrate the kindness of the well-mannered Aggies baseball team, but also the respect and admiration they have for their school and program.

Texas A&M is a school popularly known for its core values and lasting traditions, but even more for their excellence in both academics and athletics. Texas A&M is an incredible school and continues to amaze me; values are at the heart of what Texas A&M is all about: loyalty, integrity, excellence, leadership, respect and selfless service. Texas A&M baseball is special, they embrace the six core values, they strive to improve, and they constantly exceed expectations. From the moment I met this team, I knew that something was different about them.

Standing by the batting cages at the SEC Baseball Tournament one sunny day in May would forever change my life. At that time, I was at an extremely low point in my life. I was sad, alone, felt belittled, and had just been diagnosed with anxiety and depression. There were few things in life that I enjoyed or valued, but the Aggies noticed me, made me feel special, and important. I have always said since I was a little boy that when I grew up I was moving to Texas. There was never really a reason, it was just what I always said. That random day at the SEC Tournament gave me my reason. God puts people in your life for a reason, and I believe God put Texas A&M in my life to change it.

The Texas A&M baseball team is an amazing group of young men that are irreplaceable to me; after a few weeks of lows, meeting this team instantly changed me, they were my saving grace. From the beginning, there were a few players that stood out to me, including: Trevor Werner, Jordan Thompson, Brett Minnich, and even Assistant Coach Michael Earley. These people changed me from a mad, hopeless, upset child to the happy, cheerful and loving kid I am today. One moment, minute, second, word, or conversation can change someone's life. Three days at the ballpark helped me more than three months of counseling and therapy. Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined the impact this experience would have on me. Trevor Werner is an amazing individual both on and off the field, he is different, he is dedicated, disciplined, hard-working, and ultimately a gift from God. Who knew one conversation could create a life-long bond. Now, I see the Aggies as friends, brothers, role models, and even family.

After meeting many different people in such a small amount of time, I realized that the kindness coming from the Texas A&M baseball team was not just a Schlossnagle expectation, it was an "Aggie thing." Being an Aggie means that you are never alone, and that you are a part of one of the best families there is. Shortly after arriving to College Station, I got to meet Trevor's parents, Mrs. Beverly Werner and Mr. Tab Werner. They welcomed me with open arms and it felt like I had known them forever. They surprised me with one of Trevor's jerseys, and made sure that I had an amazing experience at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park. During the game, I met a man named Matthew Herring, one of the main Alumni in Section 203. He was extremely loud, supportive, funny, and had a very cool, large hat. Just like Matthew Herring, Section 203 values supporting their athletes by attending multiple sporting events each week and spending countless hours cheering on their Aggies. After the game, we stopped by Cooper's Old Pit BBQ, as seen on Micah Dallas' instagram account. There I had the most incredible dessert, a pint of apple cobbler. While there, I had the privilege of meeting Mrs. Darla Wootan and Mr. Chad Wootan, the owners of Cooper's. I was so touched by their kindness, and still to this day keep in touch with them. Texas A&M is more than just a college, it is a large family that takes pride in representing their core values and rich traditions.

Texas A&M baseball is more than just a team, Section 203 is more than just a group of Alumni and students, College Station is more than just a town, and Cooper's is more than just an amazing BBQ restaurant. This is Texas A&M, and they are special. The relationships that I have made and the bonds that I have formed with the Aggies mean the world to me. I have no doubt that God had his hand in all of this. Life is too short to live in regret, sadness, depression, or anything negative, don't let one struggle bring you down. There is always something positive that could change your life forever. God has a plan for everyone. God has perfect timing. God will put the right people in your life at the right time and for the right reasons. Texas A&M baseball is my "God Wink."
